An environmental terrorist stalks and destroys
targets perceived to have assaulted nature. A Bureau of Land Management
Special Agent tracks down this unknown assailant, who has connections all
the way to the Department of the Interior.
Mike Rejest is a dedicated
Special Agent for the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) out of Albuquerque,
New Mexico. He is responsible for the Southwest region and has over 35 law
enforcement officers reporting to him. Rejest has survived countless
administrations and even more policy shifts. However, in the past year he
has detected an ominous trend developing.
It appears as if an environmental terrorist may be operating from
somewhere in the 4-state territory Rejest oversees. Cattle barons have
been executed in the night, corporations suddenly destroyed by unexplained
explosions, even the unsolved murder of several of his field operatives
and government trappers.
Rejest is correct. A stranger, skilled with weapon and explosive alike,
has taken the law into his own hands, meting out justice in a violent and
cruel manner. His vendetta is personal, like a religion or philosophy.
Throughout the West a terrible legend is being created - of a ghost rider
on a silent horse, coming in the night to deliver swift and exacting
punishment. His victims are from all walks of life, all ages, both sexes.
All have one thing in common. They are somehow associated with ranching,
hunting, mining, logging, or any other job description that might be in
conflict with the environment.
So begins the struggle, between an agent of the law and a messenger of
retribution. The action spreads through New Mexico, Colorado, Utah and
Arizona, covering the last remaining wilderness areas of the Southwest.
Battle-lines are drawn and friendships challenged, as the environment
takes center stage before the public once again.
Complicating the entire situation is Karena Matthews, a BLM special agent
who survived an attack by the eco-terrorist and knows who he is. As the
acts of the stranger become more and more destructive, state and federal
agencies mobilize to locate this angel of death. From budget cuts to
strange policy changes, the BLM is thrust into a national scandal, leading
to a nationwide manhunt by the FBI. But the antagonist’s single-minded
objective never changes.
Finally, frustrated by the failure of everyone else, Rejest gathers his
own team of trusted fellow BLM Rangers. They set out to hunt down the
stranger in the New Mexico wilds, only to discover that they are being
pursued instead. The difference between predator and prey grows murky,
only separated by the quickness of reflexes and the caliber of firearms.
Yet the mystery deepens even more, as Rejest and his men discover more
than they could have suspected. Out of Rejest’s military past, arises a
man already dead, who has made a pact to be an avenger.

A killer dubbed the ghost rider is on the loose, and it's up to newly
appointed Special Agent Mike Rejest and his fellow Rangers from the Bureau
of Land Management to stop him.
The ghost rider appears to be an expert in terrorist tactics. A
self-proclaimed judge, jury and executioner, the ghost leaves a bloody
trail in his wake.
Rejest has been tracking the ghost's activities for a year. But it
isn't until one of his agents is shot, mended, and then safely returned to
the Field office that Rejest begins to suspect the ghost's identity.
Wanting to catch the ghost, but not wanting to be restricted by the
laws governing the BLM, Rejest turns in his resignation. Walking away
isn't that easy, his fellow Rangers won't let him go it alone. They work
behind the scenes in support of Rejest.
Although there is a clear line between right and wrong, in the end it's
hard to separate the good guys from the bad.
Action adventure is what Hart does best. The action is non-stop and
there are almost as many surprises as there are victims. For readers who
don't mind a steady supply of blood and gore, Tracks of the Predator will
be well received.
